Why take a boat trip / excursion to Comino, the Blue Lagoon and/or Crystal Lagoon, and the sea caves

I live in Malta and regularly take boat tours with family and friends around Comino, the Crystal Lagoon, the Blue Lagoon and the impressive sea caves.

In my opinion, a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon (Maltese: Bejn il-Kmiemen) is one of the most enjoyable excursions you can do during your holiday in Malta.

It is a tour you will always remember, and the crystal-clear water of the Blue Lagoon is something you will never forget.

When the sun shines, the sunlight is reflected by the white sandy seabed, giving the clear water its beautiful turquoise colour.

Here you will find the most comprehensive information about what Malta has to offer when it comes to visiting the bays and caves around Gozo.

Differences in boats, boat tours and travel types

Malta offers a wide range of medium-sized and large group boats for trips to Comino and the Blue Lagoon. These boats mainly depart from Sliema and Bugibba, two popular departure points for boat tours in Malta.

You can choose between all-inclusive boat trips, where food and drinks are included, or boats where everything is available on board and you can purchase food and drinks during the trip.

In addition to relaxed daytime cruises, Malta also offers party boat trips, where music, atmosphere and fun take centre stage. There is a suitable boat tour for every traveller, whether you are looking for peace and relaxation or a lively day at sea.

Malta party boats

Some boats are specifically designed with the right party music. A party boat is more suitable for younger travellers who are a bit more energetic than the average tourist. The captain and crew know exactly how to quickly create a party atmosphere on board. Click here for an excellent and highly recommended party boat.

Family-friendly boats

In particular, glass-bottom boats are ideal for families with children. These boats offer an unforgettable sea discovery experience and are very impressive for kids. Click here for an extremely family-friendly boat. Other non-party boats are also suitable for families with children.

The route / itinerary of the tour boats

The routes of the boat tours vary by operator. Some boats first sail to the peaceful Crystal Lagoon and past several sea caves, often with opportunities for swimming and snorkelling. Other tours combine this with a short stop on Gozo, allowing you to visit both Gozo and Comino in one day.

Swimming stop at the Blue Lagoon

Almost all boat tours include a long stop at the world-famous Blue Lagoon on Comino. Here you can swim in the crystal-clear blue water, relax on board or explore Comino on foot.

This combination of sea, nature and relaxation makes a boat trip in Malta an unforgettable experience.

Please note: evening party boats do not visit the world-famous Blue Lagoon. Always check the tour description carefully.
The comparison table above helps you choose the boat tour that best suits your wishes and holiday plans.

Ticket bookings and detailed itinerary

Prices, activities and routes are indicative. Via this link you can find the correct prices, routes, information and facilities. Click here for more information.

Departure times

Most daytime boat tours start between 08:30 and 10:00, while evening boat trips usually depart between 17:30 and 19:00 to enjoy the sunset. Some shorter tours have intermediate departure times.

Beach fun, swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing

Every boat provides plenty of opportunities for sea fun. Swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing are all well catered for.

The crystal-clear water and the stunning colours of the caves and the Blue Lagoon create unforgettable memories. Sometimes the water even appears fluorescent.

What can you expect?

In addition to an unforgettable boat cruise, an experienced captain will take you to the best locations and explain what you see along the way, including historical highlights.

The captain and crew provide pleasant music during the trip and adjust the atmosphere to suit the passengers. The friendly crew ensure your safety and take care of lunches, snacks and/or drinks.

Many boats are equipped with a waterslide, which the crew prepare for water fun. You can also enter the sea via steps or jump directly from the deck. On shorter tours, waterslides may remain closed.

Sunbathing is always possible, and sun loungers or seating areas are often available on the sun deck.

Freshwater showers are available on every boat, as well as toilets and changing facilities.

Depending on the boat, towels may be provided.

Most boats offer snorkelling equipment, usually available for a refundable deposit.

All boats comply with strict safety regulations and are equipped with life jackets.

Additional options

H3 What else can you do during the boat trip?

Of course, you will sail past various caves, but some boats are too large to enter them. The captain will explain this clearly.

However, optional speedboat trips are available from the Blue Lagoon to visit these caves.

This is truly an unforgettable experience. At high speed, you skim across the Mediterranean Sea to explore caves and admire Malta’s natural beauty, with plenty of excitement along the way.
If you have back problems or are older, it is advisable to sit at the back of the speedboat.

Access registration for Comino, Malta

From the Blue Lagoon you can easily reach the island of Comino, but access to the island is not permitted without a ticket.

During the high season, you need a free access ticket to visit Comino. Advice: book your ticket online in advance if you wish to visit the island.
If I may advise: do not combine a long walk on Comino with a boat tour. If you mainly want to explore the island, choose a cheaper ferry crossing instead.
If you are on a boat tour and just want to quickly grab a drink or snack on Comino, you are often allowed ashore without a ticket.
To enter Comino you need a free ticket, which can be booked at: https://blcomino.com/product/blue-lagoon/
You must choose one of three time slots:
- Morning: until 13:30
- Afternoon: 13:30 – 17:30
- Evening: 17:30 – 22:00

Boat trip combined with a visit to Gozo

Depending on the boat tour, it is optional to take a bus trip on Gozo, mainly to visit Victoria independently. This is very educational and an enjoyable experience.

Victoria has a rich history, which is covered extensively in this magazine. It is recommended to use the bus service organised by the same tour operator as the boat cruise.

Visit Crystal Lagoon and Blue Lagoon, Comino

Crystal Lagoon and the Blue Lagoon can be reached by boat. This page offers many options for doing so.

Best period and time to visit Crystal Lagoon, Blue Lagoon, Comino and the caves

If you join a boat tour, the timing is generally not critical.

If you take the ferry and are dropped off on the island, it is best during the high season to go either early in the morning or in the evening.

Most boat tours operate regardless of weather conditions. However, the captain may adjust the route or pick-up and drop-off points depending on the weather.

The captain’s priority is the wellbeing and safety of the crew and passengers. In severe weather conditions, the tour may be adjusted or cancelled.
