Wignacourt Water Tower
The Wignacourt Water Tower was part of a system of aqueducts which brought water to Valletta from Mdina.
The aqueduct was also build on order of Grand master Alof de Wignacourt, while the water tower was inaugurated in 1615. The tower bears the coat of arms of Wignacourt and also has a drinking through for horses. At St John's Co-Cathedral, in the Crypt of the Grand Masters, is a sepulchral monument dedicated to Grand master Alof de Wignacourt and in the inscribed text there is the mention that (in translation from Latin). His munificence surrounded all Malta with towers, fortified Valletta with bulwarks by land and sea, quenched the thirsty population from perennial springs.
