Torre dello Standardo or the Tower of the Standard

The Tower of the Standard forms part of the fortifications of Mdina, and was built by the order of Saint John in 1725.

This Tower replaces a former tower which was most probably destroyed in the earthquake of 1693. It was used as a means of communication between Mdina and the rest of Malta. If pirate ships were discovered out and the threat of invasion presented itself, a number of warnings would be issued.

These warnings could be firing a cannon, tolling the bells, lighting the beacons on similar towers or raising certain flags, all to warn the population.

At present it is a tourist information office.
