The Church of the Annunciation a.k.a. The Carmelite Church
On the spot of an older church which did not survive the 1693 earthquake, the new Carmelite Church was built between 1660 and 1675, to the design of the French military engineer and architect Mederico Blondel des Croisettes (1628-1698).
This church is very important regarding Baroque architecture, as it is the first church with an elliptical plan.
The church has works by great local and international painters, such a Mattia Preti, Stefano Erardi, Michele Bellanti and Giuseppe Calì. It was here that the uprising against Bonaparte started when the French started to loot the church silver.
