St Marks Church

The Augustinian monks came in 1383 to Malta and built their first monastery and church outside the fortifications of Mdina. After an attack of Mdina by the Ottomans the monastery and the church were demolished in 1551.

A plot and a church dedicated to San Marco were given to the Augustian monks to build a new monastery . Architect Girolamo Cassar designed it in baroque style.  In 1571 they started building and it was finished in 1588.

The facade of the church, which was built in Renaissance style, is practically in its original state. The facade has been restored in the Renaissance style in 2016.
