St James Cavalier – Castile Place
Modern art has its place in St James Cavalier, at present being used as a Centre for Creativity and modern art. St James Cavalier can be visited during weekdays and admission is in general free, except with major exhibitions.
The building was designed by Francesco Laparelli, the man responsible for the design of the fortifications around Valletta. It is purely functional and military in outlook. A cavalier is a robust building, a raised gun platform. In the English language, ‘to have a cavalier attitude’ means a person with a forceful attitude.
