St Francis of Assisi Church


The church is originally built in 1598 and rebuilt in 1681 through the munificence of the Italian Grand Master of the Order of St. John Gregorio Carafa whose emblem embellishes the façade.

In the 1920 's the church was extended eastward by the addition of a domed area and a shallow choir on a design of architect Emanuel Borg.

The church is of  primary importance in the history of the Maltese architecture as its interior was one of the first to be designed in Baroque style.

Several important paintings adorn the church, including works by the celebrated Mattia Preti and Giuseppe Cali.
