Salt extraction / salt pans
If the tide of the Mediterranean is very high, then the salty seawater runs into the basins. The sun then ensures water evaporation and the salt product remains and can then be harvested. Depending on the concentration of algae, the colour of the basin becomes light green to bright red. But also, colours from pink to light green can occur in basins with a high salt content.
Seawater contains approximately 3.5% salt. It was the Romans who were the first to install salt pans.
There are various salt extraction sites in Malta, also known as salt pans.
