Porte des Bombes
Porte des Bombes was built in 1721 as a sophisticated gate within the faussebraye (lower defensive wall outside the main walls) of the Florina lines and designed by Charles Francois de Mondion.
The realisation of the Floriana lines started in 1636 and was completed in the 18th century. The Floriana lines had a large bastioned land front with outworks and a faussebraye. The gate served as the outer entrance of Floriana, which lead to the main gate of Porta Sant'Anna.
Because of infrastructure the gate needed to be widened in 1868 with a second gate designed by archtect Col. Ew. Dunford of the Royal Engineers. The bastions on both sides of the main gate have been demolished and now the gate looks like a triumphal arch.
