Grandmaster Antoine De Paule ordered the realization of a new city that is named after him under the name "Paola". The streets are laid out in a grid plan. The city now has decorated gardens and open spaces.

The first building was a church dedicated to St. Ubaldesca, a sister in the order of St. John. The first stone was laid on Sunday, August 25, 1630 by the 78-year-old Grandmaster. Due to the increasing population, the church was expanded in 1900 and became a parish church in 1910. Eventually a larger church was built dedicated to Christ the King. The old church is in decline and needs renovation.

Furthermore, a lot of shipbuilding and repair is taking place in Paola and there is the famous wine brand Delicata.

Paola has more than 8,000 inhabitants and has become a trade centre and is home to the only mosque and the only prison in the country of Malta.
