Bailli de Montagnac battery
Mistra Battery / Bailli de Montagnac Battery

The artillery battery at Mistra Bay was designed in about 1714 after a donation from Knight Mongonier of the Order of Saint John.

This coastal defense was built around 1720.

On the advice of military engineer Bourlamaque, the artillery battery was rebuilt into what it is today under the reign of Grandmaster Manuel Pinto da Fonseca.

Above the main entrance is a coat of arms of Grandmaster Pinto and of the Bailli de Montagnac.

In 1761 the artillery battery was equipped with three 24 pounder guns and six 8 pounder guns.

During that period, the Order imported most cannons from France. Before they were mainly from Italy and the Netherlands.

The artillery battery was disarmed in 1785.

Subsequently, the artillery battery was again equipped with 18-pound guns, which were taken away by Maltese insurgents during the French blockade (1798 - 1800) and taken to Għargħar Battery.

The building was later used as a shop for fishermen, destroying parts of the artillery battery.

Now that the fishing company has a new building, restoration work will be carried out from 2012.
