Malta with its rich and characteristic buildings and locations is a popular country for taking film or filmscenes, e.g. for the films; “Helen of Troy”, “U-571”, “the count of Monte Cristo”, The DaVinci Code”, “Gladiator”, “Popeye”, etc, etc,.

Malta encourages the film industry and makes film productions in Malta accessible by means of subsidies, discounts, funds and fiscal adjustments.
The Malta Film Committee pre-sorted out 300 film locations for inspiration for a film location.
Malta has also film studios with water tanks which are the biggest in the world. In these studios more than 150 films have been made like “Corona”, “White Squall”, “Raise The Titanic”, Midnight Express”, and numerous commercial films; e.g. ; for Chanel, Heineken, Levis, Tiger Vodka, Bacardi, etc, etc.
Types of tanks are:
- The shallow tank, which was made during the establishment of the film studios in 1964, has a measurement of 91m x 122m x 1,8m deep and 4m in the centre (300ft x 400ft x 6ft deep). Filling the tank takes about 10 hours, emptying 6 to 8 hours.
- The deep tank was made in 1979 for the film “Raise The Titanic” and is mainly used for underwater shooting. The oval tank has a diameter of 107m by 49m and is 11m deep (diameter 351ft by 162ft, depth 36ft). Fillingtime: 15 hours.
- The inside tank was made in the nineties for the award winning commercial of Levis “Mermaid”. The measurements are 15m x 9m x3,6m deep (50ft x 30ft x 12ft deep). Fillingtime: 1-3 days. The roof of this tank can be removed and it has a dry camera room.
With wave making machines, wind machines, rain towers, water shooters, smoke machines and discharge devices, every type of weather condition can be simulated and each type of water condition can be made from crystal clear to cloudy.
Due to the location of the tanks by the sea it is possible to shoot films with the real sea and the horizon in the background.
