Fort Campbell
This Fort was built in the period 1937 and 1938 to protect the coastline of St. Paul's Bay / Mellieha Bay from disaster. This Fort also protected British seaplanes that were stationed in Mistra Bay.
In order not to let the Fort stand out from the sky, the Fort was surrounded by thin walls and the buildings were built a great distance apart. From the air it seemed like a normal countryside layout.
During the Second World War the Fort was expanded with a radar installation and barracks were added.
The design of the Fort is a typical Fortification of the British Empire, built around the Second World War.
The three 6-inch guns were important for the defence of the coastline. The Fort could be defended from an attack from the land with machine gun posts.
The Fort also contained a command post, underground rooms, water resources, bomb shelters, generator rooms, searchlights, etc.
Until the early 1970s it has remained intact and guarded. Later vandals have damaged the Fort.
Pay attention! Vandals have removed the steel roof support in various buildings. As a result, the roof construction is no longer safe. It is therefore advised not to enter the buildings.
