Birgu Ditch Gardens
After the Order of St. John arrived in Malta, Birgu was chosen as the capital of the Order for its strategic location.
App info: In our app you will find the location, address, opening hours and admission / entrance fee of this spot. If you use the app, you will find additional information and news about this spot on this page.
The Order began to build defensive Fortresses with bastions and canals and to develop maritime activities. The Fortresses had to withstand attacks from the Turks who invaded Malta in1565 and the Fortress was of considerable importance in the defence of the island during "The Great Siege of Malta".
The order moved to Valletta and the Fortifications of Birgu became less important.
The Fortifications were restored and modified in the 18th century. A Kaponier (roofing in a Fortification) was installed over a part of the canal.
In this app you can read more about these defences under the page Cottonera Lines and Gates.
Restoration of the Birgu Fortifications started in 2008 and in 2016 a part was opened under the name Birgu Ditch.
You can walk here between the restored walls of the Fortification. During a green walk you can become acquainted with history such as artillery, shelters from the second world war and more.
