Banca Giuratale
The Banca Giuratale, built between 1726 and 1728, was the new home of the local government of Mdina, the Università (the civil administrative council of Mdina, 1728) and the district law court. The former building, or what was left of it after the earthquake of 1693, was taken over by Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena to build his own Palazzo Vilhena at the Mdina Gate.
The Banca Giuratale was from the hand of François de Mondion, the French architect of Grand Master De Vilhena. De Mondion had rebuilt most of the city’s damaged building after 1693.
At present it houses the Legal Documentation Section of the National Archives of Malta, with all the court records from 1530 to 1899 still available. It also has the National Memory Project, where many prominent Maltese or prominent people who were in Malta are being portrayed. There are three sections: the Portrait Archive, the National Picture Archive and the Sound and Film Archive.
