Auberge de Castille - Castille Place

Auberge de Castille is at present the Office of the Prime Minister of Malta. It was originally built by the Order of St John to be used as the Grand Master's Palace. After consideration, they choose another location in the city centre.

The present building is a 1741 remodelling by Andrea Belli of the older one, built by Girolamo Cassar around 1564. This new version, in a grandiose baroque style, was commissioned by the Portuguese Grand Master Manuel Pinto de Fonseca, who ruled between 1741-1773, was of the Langue of Castile, Portugal and Leon.

Its imposing façade relies on the force of repetitive elements, while the front step is at the moment adorned with cannons. Always good for a photo opportunity!
