Addolorata cemetery
This hill is known as Tal-Ħorr and has been a burial place since prehistoric times.
The current cemetery was built from 1862 and was commissioned in 1872.
Architect Emanuele Luigi Galizia designed the cemetery in a neo-gothic style.
The name of the cemetery “Addolorata” can be translated as of Our Lady of Sorrows.
In the centre of the cemetery is an iconic neo-gothic chapel with a high steeple.
There are 277 identified Commonwealth war graves from the First and Second World War.
The cemetery was expanded in 1970 and work is currently underway on a new extension for 2880 graves.
Until 2011, the Franciscan Capuchins took care of the chapel.
