The British colonial government started a project to build schools for their mainly unschooled soldiers and sailors and for their children. The building became known as the Garrison Chapel and was erected between 1855 and 1857.

Queen Adelaide, a very pious member of the Anglican church, was rather shocked that the British troops did not have their own Anglican chapel in Valletta. The Garrison Chapel was designed and built to function as a school during the week and as a church on Sunday.

At present the building serves as the stock exchange of Malta.

The Exchange werd opgericht in 1990 and started its trading activities on 8 January 1992 . Malta Stock Exchange plc is licensed by the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) as Competent Authority to provide the services of a regulated market.
